Week 9 through 11 - What is a Library MakerSpace?

A library MakerSpace is a DIY space where students can collaborate or work individually to investigate, explore, plan, create and innovate.  Many of these spaces contain STEM or STEAM activities for the students.  This is exactly what is erupting with excitement in the Hornung Library!  In 2016, the Hornung Library was honored with a Technology Innovation Grant to purchase the items needed to create such a wonderful new learning space.  On Friday, November 4, 2016 this space was opened up to the Kindergarten classes.  And, on Monday, November 14, 2016 this space was officially opened up to the rest of the K-4 school.  On opening day, STEAM activities were offered to students including Osmos, Dash robots and the recyclable creation station.  It is a wondrous time in the library, teaching students to be critical thinkers, tinkers and problem solvers!  Click on the link below to enjoy a video presentation of the opening day activities.

Week 8 - Book Fair Week

Such wonderful books for our students to enjoy!  Thank you to everyone who came to visit the Book Fair, our parent volunteers, and Teachers for helping to promote our Fair!  It was another successful book fair, where all of the profits go back into the classrooms and library for our students.  Books are the treasure at Hornung!

Welcome Back to a New School Year!

As we embark on a new school year, I am excited to bring new lessons to our Hornung students!  From new books and author visits, to media lessons, and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) learning.  I introduced Genius Hour to our students, and that program will continue with some additional MakerSpace projects.  It is sure to be a great year in the Hornung Media Center, a true Learning Commons for our school!
